Artist Statement

The Body Series
emerged from a personal liberation. After years of rigorous training at the Florence Academy, where I studied a standardized approach to anatomy using models with nearly identical body types, this work represents my reclamation of sculpture as both playful exploration and personal healing.

The exhibition features approximately 50 3D printed forms derived from 10-12 different individuals. My process begins with digital sculpting from life models—working in-person, via Zoom, and from photographs—to capture a diversity of bodies. These digital creations are then transformed through clay sculpting or 3D printing to create molds for plaster casting. For select pieces, I incorporate shibari rope techniques to transform them into functional objects, such as hangable vases. These vessels serve a dual purpose: existing simultaneously as works of art and as homes for living plants.

By presenting this range of forms that engage both visual and tactile senses, The Body Series serves as a personal reminder to care for my body, treat it with compassion, and find joy in its existence—an invitation I extend to all who experience the work.

About the Artist

Jill Miyabara • she/her (b.1993), is a sculptor of Chinese, Japanese, and American heritage whose work bridges traditional and digital mediums. Born in China and raised in Washington DC, Miyabara's artistic journey began with 3D animation studies at MICA where she discovered clay and sculpting the figure from life.  Driven by a desire for a more tactile connection to sculpture, she pursued academic figurative sculpture at the Florence Academy of Art. This blend of digital and classical training has enabled Miyabara to develop a distinct approach – merging digital and physical sculpture in her artistic practice.
